Fucking Trans Women: A Zine About The Sex Lives Of Trans Women  (Mira Bellweather) I’m going to skip over my whole “READING THIS WAS A WAVE OF WONDERFUL REAFFIRMING EMOTIONS”-spiel and just give you the facts: Originally published as a zine FTW was the first book (or at least the first I can find that gained wide recognition) to address the sex lives of trans women. Part how-to guide, part philosophizing on sex and bodies this book addresses questions that I, an actual transsexual lady, didn’t even know I had. If you enjoy FTW you’ll be happy to hear that there’s a second volume of the zine that’s supposed to be showing up sometime soon. Come as You Are: The Surprising New Science that Will Transform Your Sex Life  (Emily Nagoski) This is not the first time Come As You Are has been recommended on Book Riot but I’m just going to bring it back because it has so much great information packed into it. In light, jargon-free language Nagoski tackles cultural assumptions about how women’s brains react to sex and offers up new ways of understanding sex drive, arousal, and more. As you read Come As You Are, Nagoski’s years as an educator really come through as she works to break things down into easy to understand pieces with examples, analogies, and quick worksheets that come together to give us a better understanding of our bodies and our sexual identities. (I am going to add that this book is built on studies and experiments done with cisgender women which may be frustrating for some readers. Nagoski does acknowledge the way in which research has focused on cis women but I’ll allow the trans readers out there to decide for themselves how they feel about her language and framing.) The Seductive Art of Japanese Rope Bondage (Midori and Craig Morey) For many people who are looking to include ropework in their sex lives, the beautiful and intricate suspensions and knots found online can make this art seem like a daunting challenge. Thankfully, Midori is here to breakdown that fear and get us started. When people come into the sensuality shop I work at looking to get started with rope I have no hesitation about putting this book into their hands. Midori is a widely acknowledged expert in her field who has years of experience with safe and gorgeous rope bondage. She starts off the book with a thorough introduction that situates this art in a historical context and makes it clear that with The Seductive Art of Japanese Rope Bondage she’s offering a guide to practical rope bondage that the reader can use at home. While this book won’t make you a master of rope bondage, it will teach you the basics, give you some fun new things to incorporate into your sex life, and help you build a strong foundation to continue upon. Fun Home and Lacans Mirror Stage - Literature Essay Samples

The graphic novel Fun Home by Alison Bechdel opens with a series of panels portraying how she and her father used to play airplane. At the same time, Bechdel makes a connection between them playing airplane and the myth of Icarus and Daedalus. It is important to note that what Alison and her father are doing in this scene is role-playing. One of them has to be the support while the other one flies. It is a role-playing game, but nevertheless a game, and both of them appear very serious while playing it. Alison gets to fly, just as Icarus, while playing this game, but that is not necessarily true in their daily lives outside the airplane game. Bechdel says that â€Å"in [their] particular re-enactment of this mythic relationship, it was not [her], but [her] father who was to plummet from the sky† (Bechdel p. 4). This puts into question who of them is the father in their relationship. The mixed-up parallels between Alison, her father, Icarus, and Daedalus highlight the unclear r elationship of power between Alison and her dad. The conflicts between them were almost always caused by her father trying to solve his personal problems through her. He wants her to dress very feminine because that is something that he never got to do. He fails to acknowledge that her daughter is also going through stuff of her own. Instead of playing the role of a father, he is putting all the pressure on Alison to be his and her own father at the same time. The father gets to fly as Icarus supported by Alison as Daedalus constantly and Alison can’t keep up with that. Whenever Alison wants to open up to her father, the conversation turns toward her father’s issues. During the scene in the car (p. 220), after Alison tries to find out if her father knew she was gay all this time, his father only focuses on himself and dismisses Alison’s questions. The book that she thought he was trying to give her as a guide for self-discovery was actually a way of introducing himself. Because in the end, everything was about him. That is when Bechdel questions which of them was the father because she is doing all the parental listening (p. 221). Bechdel concludes the novel with a scene at the pool playing with his father (p. 230-32). While the scene is going on, she narrates her own reasoning regarding paternity and her relationship with her father. It was not as simple as her being the father to her own father. Their relationship was tricky and they both, especially the father, benefited from each other to find out their own identities. Bechdel tries to uncover to the reader the nature of their relationship by juxtaposing the pool scene with both Ulysses and the legend of Icarus. She feels like her father sacrificed a lot that did not belong to him for his own sake, just as Joyce sacrificed Beach’s financial stability for Ulysses (p. 230-1). At the same time, his father was Icarus and flied too close to the sun, but â€Å"he was always there to catch [Alison] when [she] leapt† (p. 232). The novel ends with them playing in the pool together, as expressionless as when they played airplane. This unclear relationship is further distorted by Bechdel’s act of writing a story about her father, in which she has ultimate control over how she crafts his character. Taking into consideration Lacan’s Mirror Stage, Alison’s father establishes his ego as fundamentally dependent upon external objects or others. Through books, he creates an â€Å"ideal† self of who he thinks he is or should be. As the idea he has in his head does not coincide with his experiences, he needs Alison to fill that inconsistency. He dressed Alison very femininely when she was a little girl because that is who he wanted to be. His idea self or identity is within those books and not in his person, that is why he introduces himself by giving Alison the books that have helped him form his identity or his imagos. The father’s encounter with the â€Å"other† ends up being in books and sometimes other men, that makes him unable to be himself with his own family and strain s and distorts his relationship with Alison. The parallels that Alison makes between her and her father, and Icarus and Daedalus are no longer parallels. They are a far more complicated than the initial simplistic comparison. The confusion that Bechdel creates about who is who throughout the novel reflects her own confusion regarding her relationship with her father. The fact that us as readers cannot get closure is also representative of Bechdels anxiety of never getting an answer herself.

What Is BEDMAS

There are acronyms that help individuals remember how to perform a set of procedure in math. BEDMAS (otherwise known as PEMDAS) is one of them. BEDMAS is an acronym to help remember an order of operations in algebra basics. When you have math problems that require the use of different operations (multiplication, division, exponents, brackets, subtraction, addition) order is necessary and mathematicians have agreed on the BEDMAS/PEMDAS order. Each letter of BEDMAS refers to one part of the operation to be used. In math, there is an agreed-upon set of procedures for the order in which your operations are performed. You will likely come up with a wrong answer if you perform calculations out of the order. When you follow the correct order, the answer will be correct. Remember to work from left to right as you use the BEDMAS order of operations. Each letter stands for:   B - BracketsE - ExponentsD - DivisionM - MultiplicationA - AdditionS - Subtraction You have probably also heard the acronym PEMDAS. Using PEMDAS, the order of operations is the same, however, the P merely means parentheses. In these references, parentheses,  and brackets mean the same thing. There are a couple of things to remember when applying the PEMDAS/BEDMAS order of operations. Brackets/Parentheses always come first and exponents come second. When working with multiplication and division, you do whichever comes first as you work from left to right. If multiplication comes first, do it before dividing. The same holds true for addition and subtraction, when the subtraction comes first, subtract before you add. It may help to look at BEDMAS like this: Brackets (or Parentheses)ExponentsDivision or MultiplicationAddition or Subtraction When you are working with parentheses and there is more than one set of parentheses, you will work with the inside set of parentheses and work your way to the outside parentheses. Set in Verona, Italy, the story is the tale of two star-crossed lovers and has become a major trope within popular culture, so much so that it has been adapted to screen several times within the last century. The film that had an impact on me was the movie Crash.   This Oscar-winning movie written and directed by Paul Haggis showed so many lessons about life that are important.   The movie demonstrated the need for empathy in this world. If a woman like this is angry all the time, what can that say for the rest of us? She berates and chastises everyone due to her own unhappiness, and I believe that may just be the general state of the world.   And at one point, she tells her maid that she is indeed her best friend.   This is the maid who has taken her to the hospital after she has fallen down the stairs; her friends were too busy.   We need to find ways to connect with each other and make our lieves more fulfilling, so that we can have relationships with other people. That is the lesson that Jean teaches in the film.   the old adage that money cannot buy happiness is shown again.   Meaningful people in our lives bring happiness. Another character who displayed the importance of relationships, and was the opposite of Jean’s character was the Latino locksmith Daniel (Michael Pena).   By first glance this man did not have half of what Jean’s character did.   He was just a working-class guy trying to make a living.   However, when we catch a glimpse of him at home with his family, our take is altogether different.   The viewer sees him under the covers with his daughter telling her a sotyr about the invisible cloak and being a dad and a family man.   His story is plauful and fun, not just matter of fact. â€Å"She had these little stubby wings, like she could’ve glued them on, you know, like I’m gonna believe she’s a fairy. So she said, â€Å"I’ll prove it.† So she reaches into her backpack and pulls out this invisible cloak and she ties it around my neck. And she tells me that it’s impenetrable. You know   what impenetrable means? It means nothing can go through it. No bullets, nothing. She told me that if I wore it, nothing would hurt me. And I did. And my whole life, I never got shot, stabbed, nothing. I mean, how weird   is that?† (Crash). He enjoys his time with his daughter, like tucking her in at night.   It seems that he is good at his job, but he works to live rather than lives to work.   he lloves his wife and his daughter, and the viewer cringes at the idea of something horrible happening in this family.   The scene where Daniel’s daughter almost gets shot is one of the most tense of the film.   This man, while he does not have money or status, shows the viewer what life is all about.   he forms meaningful connections in life, and these are what sustain him. And there is another character who seems to be in the middle, between Jean and Daniel in his ability or lack of ability to form relationships.   This is officer Ryan.   While he is a racist cop and does some terrible things in this movie, he is also a human being as evidenced by the scenes with his father.   Because of his powerlessness at home, he is able to commit horrible atrocities at work and yet, turn around and do something entirely redeeming.   His sense of powerlessness is because his father may have cancer, but their HMO prevents them from using a different doctor. His father is having prostate trouble, and the viewer sees the two of them together at night in the bathroom.   The humiliation in these scenes is overwhelming, and the love between father and son is clearly shown.   But Officer Ryan takes all that out on those around him.   He tries to appeal to the caseworker Shaniqua, but he still insults her by lashing out about affirmative action.   In the end, she cannot form a connection with him, and she honestly anwers his pleas with, â€Å"Your father sounds like a good man. And if he’d come in here today I probably would have approved his request. But he didn’t come in, you did. And for his sake, that’s a real shame.† We can’t really blame Shaniqua for not wanting to help him, but the viewer wishes that she would.   Again and again we are shown what happens when we lack compassion and empathy for others and do not form relationships. The title itself and the opening quote implies that we are too busy with our own lives to get to know others, but that many of our preconceived notions or prejudices would be gone if only we would take the time.   This applies for people from all walks of life.   If rich people never do things where they come into contact with different types of people, the preconceived notions will continue to exist.   The other lesson here is that everyone has a story and a reason for acting the way they do.   If human beings could just take the time to learn about toehrs, we could at least begin to understand why they act the way they do.   Crash does a phenomenal job of showing us these things without preaching. Slowly Going Backward Essay It would be ludicrous to think that every man, woman, and child has complete freedom today in our democracy. We are plagued by crime, ignorance, and political injustice every day and a lot of us are unaware about our surroundings. I am writing this essay on a computer that needed en-ergy burned by fossil fuels to be made. I eat processed food which creates massive amounts of waste for our Earth to take care of. Many of us believe our way of life is easier than it was years ago. In many cases it is, however we fail to see the consequences brought forth by our need to make life easier. To much freedom has brought about sedentary lifestyles where machines do the thinking and the work for us. I saw a television commercial where people paid money to breathe clean air and those were short a dime remained breathless. We live in a so called free country, but paying to grab a quick breath of air is not my idea of freedom. Those who were less fortunate would have to live confined to their own homes just to survive. And those who were homeless would not survive at all in a world that has non-breathable air. People are sponges. We soak up information and are brainwashed into making life easier. The easier life gets, the more destruction we give to the Earth. Our lakes and forests are dying. Acid rain has made these ecosystems unable to support life. Rainforests are being cut down for cattle ranching and farmland. As we cut the forest down we could be losing valuable resources that have not yet been found. Despite all of this corruption, we continue to write to our e-mail pals, we dine at fast food restaurants, and we drive our fast cars. All seems well for now, but well be very, very, sorry. We have brilliant technology that can search for life near distant suns. We can send satellites to Mars and send humans to space while millions are starving on our own planet! The amount of money wasted on space exploration is sickening. Theres no question that it is interesting to know whats in the sky every time we look up, however we must get our priorities straight. We are losing touch with our own world and reaching out to others. If there is life beyond our boundaries, let them be. If nature intended to let us know about others in the universe, we would know. As I step out on to a new plateau, I am scared rather than excited. Becoming an adult should be filled with security, happiness, and excitement, but nowadays it is filled with uncertainty. The jobs we prepare for in college may be taken over by computers as soon as we graduate, leaving us with no hope for raising families of our own, and no hope for our future that was supposed to be secure. The funny thing about our society is that we see corruption take place before our eyes, but we let it happen. We are extremely materialistic and my generation has been termed the Gimme generation because of this attitude. As the famous English poet Wordsworth once said, Getting and Spending we lay waste our powers. We are consumed by money and forwarding ourselves, while traditional values like love, honor, respect, and trust are thrown into the waste paper bas-ket. Families are broken apart because of ideas set by television, children fall into a circle of drugs at an early age, and young wome n are pregnant with no future at 16 years old. The only question Im left asking is , Where do we go from here? My soul belief is that many of the problems the world faces today is because of the human desire to change. Change is natural as generations grow old and new ones are born. Not all of our changes are bad either. Some people are capable of creating and doing amazing things.
