Great Depression and WWII - NCHP Block 6 Many Americans still think that the Great Depression was caused by the stock market crashing, on October 29, 1929. What is true that most economists think now is that the stock market crash alone could not be fully to blame. There were many factors into creating the nationwide depression. The first being that the â€Å"Roaring 20’s† was the first time North Carolinians and their American counterparts could buy a lot more of the new consumer items, like washers and toasters, on newly available credit. The wealthy elite along with the new American business class, could not wait to come down to and enjoy leisure activities like the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina, to spend all of that disposable free-flowing money. This was also one of the first times that average, middle-class people had more freedom because they had more income. In addition, banks in our state, as well as other states in the union, were small and unprotected. That means that when a bank wen t bankrupt, they could not pay back all of their loans or savings. Many farmers in North Carolina started to mechanize their new, larger farms to compete with other farms. This increased supply and dropped demand, lowered the price of food and made it harder to pay back the loans for the new tractors and machinery when the banks got into trouble for over-extending credit. What Is BEDMAS

There are acronyms that help individuals remember how to perform a set of procedure in math. BEDMAS (otherwise known as PEMDAS) is one of them. BEDMAS is an acronym to help remember an order of operations in algebra basics. When you have math problems that require the use of different operations (multiplication, division, exponents, brackets, subtraction, addition) order is necessary and mathematicians have agreed on the BEDMAS/PEMDAS order. Each letter of BEDMAS refers to one part of the operation to be used. In math, there is an agreed-upon set of procedures for the order in which your operations are performed. You will likely come up with a wrong answer if you perform calculations out of the order. When you follow the correct order, the answer will be correct. Remember to work from left to right as you use the BEDMAS order of operations. Each letter stands for:   B - BracketsE - ExponentsD - DivisionM - MultiplicationA - AdditionS - Subtraction You have probably also heard the acronym PEMDAS. Using PEMDAS, the order of operations is the same, however, the P merely means parentheses. In these references, parentheses,  and brackets mean the same thing. There are a couple of things to remember when applying the PEMDAS/BEDMAS order of operations. Brackets/Parentheses always come first and exponents come second. When working with multiplication and division, you do whichever comes first as you work from left to right. If multiplication comes first, do it before dividing. The same holds true for addition and subtraction, when the subtraction comes first, subtract before you add. It may help to look at BEDMAS like this: Brackets (or Parentheses)ExponentsDivision or MultiplicationAddition or Subtraction When you are working with parentheses and there is more than one set of parentheses, you will work with the inside set of parentheses and work your way to the outside parentheses. Tricks to Remember PEMDAS To remember PEMDAS or BEDMAS, the following sentences have been used:Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.Big Elephants Destroy Mice and Snails.Pink Elephants Destroy Mice and Snails You can make up your own sentence to help you remember the acronym and there certainly are more sentences out there to help you remember the order of operations. The more you practice using BEDMAS, the easier it gets. Once you are comfortable with the understanding of the order of operations, try using a spreadsheet to calculate the order of operations. Spreadsheets offer a variety of formulas and computational opportunities when your calculator isnt handy. Ultimately, its important to understand the math behind the acronym. Even if the acronym is helpful, understand how, why and when it works is more important. William Shakespeare wrote Romeo and Juliet somewhere between 1591 and 1595 and the tragedy, which was based on an Italian tale that was translated into verse in 1562 and prose in 1567, was first performed in 1597. Set in Verona, Italy, the story is the tale of two star-crossed lovers and has become a major trope within popular culture, so much so that it has been adapted to screen several times within the last century. In 1936, George Cukors version stared Norma Shearer as Juliet and Leslie Howard as Romeo and the film earned several nominations at the Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress, and Best Art Direction. The film that had an impact on me was the movie Crash.   This Oscar-winning movie written and directed by Paul Haggis showed so many lessons about life that are important.   The movie demonstrated the need for empathy in this world. In any real city, you walk, you know? You brush past people, people bump into you. In L.A., nobody touches you. We ´re always behind this metal and glass. I think we miss that touch so much, that we crash into each other, just so we can feel something.† means that we need more relating and touch and understanding from the people around us.   This idea of being able to relate to each other and get along is shown over and over again in this movie One example of the theme of getting along are the characters of Rick and Jean (Brendan Fraser and Sandra Bullock), a rich white couple.   Rick is a DA who tries to remain unprejudiced, but the viewer feels like he is all about image so he can be re-elected.   Nothing â€Å"real† seems to come from him, and the viewer suspects that he is having an affair with his white co-worker.   Jean, on the other hand, is all real.   She is increidibly prejudiced against the Hispanic locksmith who comes to the house.   She very clearly tells her husband exactly what she thinks. â€Å"I would like the locks changed again in the morning. If a woman like this is angry all the time, what can that say for the rest of us? She berates and chastises everyone due to her own unhappiness, and I believe that may just be the general state of the world.   And at one point, she tells her maid that she is indeed her best friend.   This is the maid who has taken her to the hospital after she has fallen down the stairs; her friends were too busy.   We need to find ways to connect with each other and make our lieves more fulfilling, so that we can have relationships with other people. That is the lesson that Jean teaches in the film.   the old adage that money cannot buy happiness is shown again.   Meaningful people in our lives bring happiness. Another character who displayed the importance of relationships, and was the opposite of Jean’s character was the Latino locksmith Daniel (Michael Pena).   By first glance this man did not have half of what Jean’s character did.   He was just a working-class guy trying to make a living.   However, when we catch a glimpse of him at home with his family, our take is altogether different.   The viewer sees him under the covers with his daughter telling her a sotyr about the invisible cloak and being a dad and a family man.   His story is plauful and fun, not just matter of fact. â€Å"She had these little stubby wings, like she could’ve glued them on, you know, like I’m gonna believe she’s a fairy. So she said, â€Å"I’ll prove it.† So she reaches into her backpack and pulls out this invisible cloak and she ties it around my neck. And she tells me that it’s impenetrable. You know   what impenetrable means? It means nothing can go through it. No bullets, nothing. She told me that if I wore it, nothing would hurt me. And I did. And my whole life, I never got shot, stabbed, nothing. I mean, how weird   is that?† (Crash). He enjoys his time with his daughter, like tucking her in at night.   It seems that he is good at his job, but he works to live rather than lives to work.   he lloves his wife and his daughter, and the viewer cringes at the idea of something horrible happening in this family.   The scene where Daniel’s daughter almost gets shot is one of the most tense of the film.   This man, while he does not have money or status, shows the viewer what life is all about.   he forms meaningful connections in life, and these are what sustain him. And there is another character who seems to be in the middle, between Jean and Daniel in his ability or lack of ability to form relationships.   This is officer Ryan.   While he is a racist cop and does some terrible things in this movie, he is also a human being as evidenced by the scenes with his father.   Because of his powerlessness at home, he is able to commit horrible atrocities at work and yet, turn around and do something entirely redeeming.   His sense of powerlessness is because his father may have cancer, but their HMO prevents them from using a different doctor. His father is having prostate trouble, and the viewer sees the two of them together at night in the bathroom.   The humiliation in these scenes is overwhelming, and the love between father and son is clearly shown.   But Officer Ryan takes all that out on those around him.   He tries to appeal to the caseworker Shaniqua, but he still insults her by lashing out about affirmative action.   In the end, she cannot form a connection with him, and she honestly anwers his pleas with, â€Å"Your father sounds like a good man. And if he’d come in here today I probably would have approved his request. But he didn’t come in, you did. And for his sake, that’s a real shame.† We can’t really blame Shaniqua for not wanting to help him, but the viewer wishes that she would.   Again and again we are shown what happens when we lack compassion and empathy for others and do not form relationships. The title itself and the opening quote implies that we are too busy with our own lives to get to know others, but that many of our preconceived notions or prejudices would be gone if only we would take the time.   This applies for people from all walks of life.   If rich people never do things where they come into contact with different types of people, the preconceived notions will continue to exist.   The other lesson here is that everyone has a story and a reason for acting the way they do.   If human beings could just take the time to learn about toehrs, we could at least begin to understand why they act the way they do.   Crash does a phenomenal job of showing us these things without preaching. Slowly Going Backward Essay It would be ludicrous to think that every man, woman, and child has complete freedom today in our democracy. We are plagued by crime, ignorance, and political injustice every day and a lot of us are unaware about our surroundings. I am writing this essay on a computer that needed en-ergy burned by fossil fuels to be made. I eat processed food which creates massive amounts of waste for our Earth to take care of. Many of us believe our way of life is easier than it was years ago. In many cases it is, however we fail to see the consequences brought forth by our need to make life easier. To much freedom has brought about sedentary lifestyles where machines do the thinking and the work for us. I saw a television commercial where people paid money to breathe clean air and those were short a dime remained breathless. We live in a so called free country, but paying to grab a quick breath of air is not my idea of freedom. Those who were less fortunate would have to live confined to their own homes just to survive. And those who were homeless would not survive at all in a world that has non-breathable air. People are sponges. We soak up information and are brainwashed into making life easier. The easier life gets, the more destruction we give to the Earth. Our lakes and forests are dying. Acid rain has made these ecosystems unable to support life. Rainforests are being cut down for cattle ranching and farmland. As we cut the forest down we could be losing valuable resources that have not yet been found. Despite all of this corruption, we continue to write to our e-mail pals, we dine at fast food restaurants, and we drive our fast cars. All seems well for now, but well be very, very, sorry. We have brilliant technology that can search for life near distant suns. We can send satellites to Mars and send humans to space while millions are starving on our own planet! The amount of money wasted on space exploration is sickening. Theres no question that it is interesting to know whats in the sky every time we look up, however we must get our priorities straight. We are losing touch with our own world and reaching out to others. If there is life beyond our boundaries, let them be. If nature intended to let us know about others in the universe, we would know. As I step out on to a new plateau, I am scared rather than excited. Becoming an adult should be filled with security, happiness, and excitement, but nowadays it is filled with uncertainty. The jobs we prepare for in college may be taken over by computers as soon as we graduate, leaving us with no hope for raising families of our own, and no hope for our future that was supposed to be secure. The funny thing about our society is that we see corruption take place before our eyes, but we let it happen. We are extremely materialistic and my generation has been termed the Gimme generation because of this attitude. As the famous English poet Wordsworth once said, Getting and Spending we lay waste our powers. We are consumed by money and forwarding ourselves, while traditional values like love, honor, respect, and trust are thrown into the waste paper bas-ket. Families are broken apart because of ideas set by television, children fall into a circle of drugs at an early age, and young wome n are pregnant with no future at 16 years old. The only question Im left asking is , Where do we go from here? My soul belief is that many of the problems the world faces today is because of the human desire to change. Change is natural as generations grow old and new ones are born. Not all of our changes are bad either. Some people are capable of creating and doing amazing things. We must be careful not to exaggerate our ability to change. We have to survive; not be destroyed. We have to get our priorities straight and speak out for what we
